Spinach Dal (soppine Tovve)
Ingredients:
For the Ground Masala:
- 1 tablespoon Jeera (Cumin seeds)
- 1/4 Cup grated Coconut
- 4 Green Chillies (depends on your spice level)
- 1 tablespoon raw Rice
For the Dal:
- 1 cup Tuvar Dal (Pigeon Pea Lentils)
- 2 cups Spinach, cleaned and chopped
- Salt to taste
Instructions:
Prepare the Masala:
- In a blender, grind the Jeera, Coconut, Green Chillies, and raw Rice to a smooth paste with a little water. Set aside.
Cook the Dal:
- Rinse the Tuvar Dal thoroughly.
- In a pressure cooker or a large pot, cook the Tuvar Dal with 2 cups of water until soft and fully cooked (about 3-4 whistles in a pressure cooker, or 25-30 minutes in a pot).
Cook the Spinach:
- Add the cleaned and chopped Spinach to the cooked Dal.
- Let it cook for about 5-7 minutes until the Spinach is tender.
Combine and Simmer:
- Add the ground masala paste to the Dal and Spinach mixture.
- Stir well to combine and let it simmer for another 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- Add salt to taste.
Serve:
- Serve hot with steamed rice or roti.
Tip: You can temper the dal with mustard seeds, curry leaves, and a pinch of asafoetida for added flavor before serving.
